I'm a teacher and cannot rationalise how we expect to find out about the learning done in first year with an exam at the end of third year? Makes no sense.
The existing junior cert is very expensive to administer in terms of purely testing knowledge.
What about replacing the system with a state administered on-line multi-choice testing system, on a more frequent basis (say end of term), from first year on? This would examine the relative performance of schools as well as students.
It could include some IQ elements to measure performance against capacity?
I would also think we should retain a simplified junior cert step as it is an important pschological step for the students - but perhaps a more simplified version, a combination of on-line testing and teacher-assessed project work.
As a teacher, I would love to see students gather grades as they progress throughout the three years of junior cycle - it shouldn't be all left until 3rd year. Therefore we will reward the efforts made by students, and not simply the amount they can cram into their brains the few weeks preceding the examinations.
