the junior cycle has to change. we need to focus more on developing the key educational skills and getting them involved in team work, meeting deadlines and building up a portfolio of work throughout the three years. Teachers need more freedom in their classes to encourage these key skills. Syllabuses need to be shortened and a lot less emphasis on the final exam.

I see my colleagues in school working harder and harder in a system that doesn't recognise their efforts...outside of their capacity to drag students through courses that are too long and too numerous. Demoralising and a waste of great teaching talent. It must change.

Acknowledging that the J.C. Cycle plays a crucial role in our educational system and needs change, one has to make sure that this doesnt forget about key subjects that may not be yet seen as Core subjects such as Home Economics. This subject offers students valuble life skills that are transferable throughout life. Partial loss of recognition of the integrity of the subject by dividing it into themes or modules would mean the loss of these valuble skills.
