Junior Certificate examinations

There are way too many junior cert exam subjects. 11 is way too many too study. Less subjects and more specialised.

Im a transition year student and i think that there are too many subjects to do exams for, some subjects should have marks throughout the year and a shorter written exam at the end of third year. Also more practical work in subjects like science.

I think the Junior Cert needs to be more focused on constant assesment and instead of having a national state exam after three years, there should be a normal school summer exam, just like after year one and two.
Group/Team work should be encouraged.

Like the third commenter said 'meeting deadlines and building up a portfolio of work throughout the three years' is a great way to go.

At the moment the course seems to be focused more around what questions are going to come up in the exam instead of actually learning for life.

I am a TY student and I think it's good to have a state exam to prepare you for the Leaving Certificate. You won't feel as scared if you have the Junior Certificate because you're getting used to state exams. But I thought the Junior Certificate was very easy and they should improve the curriculum and make the questions more difficult.

As someone who did the Inter Cert many years ago,I look at the current exam and don't see any major differences. How can we have an exam in 2010 that is so similar to one that I endured in the 1970's. Surely we can do better!

There is no way anyone can squeeze three years of work into a 2 hour exam, it's a joke!

As someone who went to school in Ireland and Australia I think it's really important to have continuous assessment because I think it is a system that is less pressured and is more learner centred making it a more enjoyable learning experience.

i think the junior cert was a really good preperation for the leaving although there was far too many subjects and puts too much pressure on the young person. Perhaps a continual assessment should be introduced!

The junior cert is a good preperation for the leaving as it gives you an idea what is involved in a big exam. However the three years are too long and students loose sight of the exam. 2nd year is a bit of a waste as nothing is done! Two years for junior cert and three years for leaving would be more suitable!

I'm a 6th year with my leaving cert to look forwad to. I believe that there is too much focus on this exam too late. I don't want to pressure young people early on but there should be a class or a day to show young people different options to college other than points. This should be shown to junior certs so they can have some relief from the pressures of leaving cert..

I'm a 5th year student and I think there should more choice of subjects for junior certs subjects... geog/history shouldn't be compulsory.. for a state examination anyways.

The junior cert is too long and it is taken as too much of a big deal. The leaving cert should be a longer period and the junior cert a test or examination at the end of every term or month. More subjects should be on offer to student, because that might be the cause of people failing because the don`t like or enjoy the subject.

Hi I’m from Wicklow comhairle and I am in 4th year my opinion on the junior cert is that there should be less pressure put on students because many students are too stressed out about studying for the exams..

We would like to see a shorter junior cycle and a longer senior cycle. e.g. don't have 1st year as an introductory course to 2nd level education go straight into the curriculum in 1st year. Also a class such as life skills should be created. For example this class could teach us about how to set up bank accounts and how to deal with certain situations that you will face throughout life such as how to buy train tickets and deal with the conductors when they bring you to the back of the carriage and start giving out to you because you bought the wrong ticket.

We are transition students representing Fingal County. We believe there should be more practical elements to the Junior Cert. So many subjects such as Irish finish once you leave the class room and are useless outside of school. We are here today to fix this problem by means of putting forward ideas that were put forward to us at Consultation Days.

I'm a first year student in Leixlip, and i think that we should be taught subjects from a generalist point of view. This will help us to better understand how everything connects and fits together. to get a better understanding of knowledge as a whole.

I took the junior certificate in 2010 and there was a very big hype on the exam and a lot of pressure was put on the students who were only between the ages of 12-15. This pressure leads to a lot of mental illnesses in a young age range. I feel the junior certificate should only be 2 years and the leaving cert to be 3 years since the leaving cert is meant to be the more important exam that judges your future in university and college.

The changes that are going to be suggested at the Dáil Na nÓg consultation day must recognise though that we can't just up heave the current structure we have, instead we need to work with it, and evolve it.

Thankfully we've a room full of sensible teenagers who are committed to changing the system not for their benefit but for those of the younger generation...the adults of today could take note...D
